Repair It or Replace It: Kearny Fences
Fence Contractors in Kearny often deal with fences that are old rather than missing. Census figures show 91.0% of Kearny residents were living in the same house a year earlier and homes held that long tend to have fences that have been patched more than once. Our first job is often an honest answer to a simple question: is this worth fixing?
What the town expects. Kearny's property maintenance code says the exterior of every residential structure or accessory structure, including fences, shall be maintained in good repair. A leaning section, missing pickets or a gate hanging off one hinge is more than a cosmetic issue. If you have received a notice from the town, send us a photo of it along with the fence and we will tell you what it takes to bring the fence back into shape.
When repair makes sense. If the posts are solid and only a few boards, rails or vinyl panels are damaged, replacing those parts costs far less than a new fence. Gates are a common fix: we reset hinge posts, add anti-sag kits to wood gates and adjust latches so they close on their own. Chain link often needs only a new top rail, a re-stretched section or fresh tension bands.
When it is time for new. Rot at the base of several posts, a fence that moves when you push it, or panels that no longer match after years of piecemeal repairs usually point to replacement. At that point we look at the whole run and the material choice again, since what was installed decades ago may not be what you want now.
Height and placement under the zoning code. Section 38-6.9 of the Kearny zoning chapter says no fence or wall to the rear of the minimum required front yard may be more than six feet high, and fences must be built within the property lines. Placement matters as much as height: if you are not sure where the line is, a survey or the existing markers settle it before we dig. The zoning chapter counts fences as structures, and Section 38-9.6 covers zoning permits for erecting structures, so check with the town's zoning office whether your fence needs one; we can walk you through it.
Corner lots. At certain major street intersections listed in the code, Section 38-5.1 bars any obstruction more than 30 inches above street grade inside the sight triangle at the corner. If your house sits on one of those corners, the front corner of the fence may need to stay low or be set back. We check this on corner properties before drawing up the layout.
Uplands, Meadows and South Kearny. The town divides roughly into the Kearny Uplands, the Kearny Meadows and South Kearny, where the Hackensack and Passaic rivers meet. Arlington, one named section, takes its name from a former Erie Railroad station beside the Arlington Mill plant. Out in the meadowland, the code even requires owners of virgin, undeveloped meadow to fence off service roads with a lockable gate, with a key left with the fire chief. That is an unusual rule, and it shows how seriously the town takes fencing.
What we build.
- Wood fences, from picket fronts to board privacy backyards
- Vinyl fences in white, tan and wood-grain finishes
- Aluminum and ornamental fences that suit brick and frame homes
- Chain link for side yards, dogs and commercial lots
- Privacy fences up to the six-foot rear limit
- Fence repair and gates of every common type
Digging safely. New Jersey requires a One Call request before any digging, including fence posts, placed at least three and no more than ten business days ahead. We submit it for you.
Call (551) 212-8142 and tell us whether you are thinking repair or replacement. We will look at the fence, give you both options in writing when both make sense, and let you choose.
Kearny Rules and Records
- Fences must be kept in repair. Kearny's property maintenance code, Section 17-8.10(a), requires the exterior of every structure or accessory structure on residential property, including fences, to be maintained in good repair.
- Six feet behind the front yard. Under Section 38-6.9 of the zoning chapter, no fence or wall located to the rear of the minimum required front yard may be erected more than six feet in height, and fences must be erected within the property lines.
- Corner sight triangles. Section 38-5.1 prohibits any obstruction more than 30 inches above the established street grade within the sight triangle at listed major street intersections, which can limit fence height at the corner of a lot.
- Long-term residents. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 show 91.0% of Kearny residents in the same house a year earlier, owner-occupancy of 42.9% and a median owner-occupied value of $459,400. The 2020 census counted 15,392 housing units.
- Mill-town roots. Scottish immigrants arrived in the mid-1870s to work at the Clark Thread Company and Nairn Linoleum mills, giving Kearny its Little Scotland identity. The town was incorporated on January 19, 1899.

Kearny Questions
I got a property maintenance notice about my fence. Can you help?
Yes. Kearny's code requires fences to be kept in good repair. Send us the notice and photos of the fence, and we will tell you whether a repair will satisfy it or whether replacement makes more sense, with the scope in writing.
How tall can my backyard fence be in Kearny?
Section 38-6.9 limits fences and walls behind the minimum required front yard to six feet. Front-yard rules differ, and corners at listed major intersections have a 30-inch sight-triangle limit, so tell us where the fence will run and we will confirm the numbers for your lot with the town.
My house is on a corner. Does that change anything?
It can. At listed major intersections, the code keeps the sight triangle clear of anything taller than 30 inches above street grade. We check whether your corner is affected and shape the layout so drivers can still see.
Is it worth repairing a 20-year-old wood fence?
Sometimes. If the posts are still sound, new boards and gate hardware can buy years. If several posts are rotted at the ground, replacement is usually the better use of money. We tell you which way we would go and why.
