Elizabeth Fencing, Neighborhood by Neighborhood
If you are comparing fence contractors in Elizabeth, it helps to work with one that knows the city is a collection of very different neighborhoods. Elizabeth was founded in 1664 as Elizabethtown and served as New Jersey's first capital, and its housing has been built, rebuilt and divided over more than three centuries. The right fence for a house in Westminster is rarely the right fence for a two-family home in Peterstown, so we plan around the block, not a catalog page.
Large households, busy yards. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 show 2.95 people per household in Elizabeth and 51.6% of residents born outside the country. Yards here often hold extended family gatherings, gardens, kids' play areas and parked cars at the same time. Owner occupancy is 25.6%, so many projects are ordered by landlords who want a fence that keeps tenant areas organized and needs little upkeep.
Westminster and Elmora Hills
Westminster, along the Elizabeth River by Hillside, was named for its Tudor-style estates and is one of the city's more affluent areas. Elmora Hills, in the northwest, is described as middle to upper-middle class. Larger lots in these areas suit ornamental aluminum or steel-look fences at the front, with wood or vinyl privacy fencing in the rear. Driveway gates are a common add-on, and we plan swing direction so a gate never opens across the sidewalk.
Peterstown and the North End
Peterstown, developed at the end of the 19th century and home to the historic Union Square market, and the North End, built mostly in the 1920s for workers at the Duesenberg automobile plant, have closer-set houses and narrower lots. Here a fence often needs to fit between a house wall and a property line with little room to spare. We take careful measurements, use slimmer posts where the material allows, and suggest walk gates sized for trash cans and bikes.
Elizabethport and Frog Hollow
Elizabethport is the city's oldest neighborhood, and its waterfront now includes townhomes and duplexes. Frog Hollow is a small community east of Atlantic Street, near the Arthur Kill. Near the water, moisture and salt in the air are harder on bare steel and untreated wood. We lean toward vinyl, powder-coated aluminum and galvanized or stainless hardware for these streets.
Near the port and the airport
Part of Newark Liberty International Airport lies within Elizabeth's boundaries, and the city shares Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, one of the busiest ports in the world. Homeowners near those corridors often ask for solid privacy fencing to block views of traffic and lots. It screens well, though no fence makes a yard quiet. Chain link with privacy slats, where allowed, is a lower-cost alternative for side and rear lines.

Permits and utility markouts
We check with the city what approval your fence needs, especially for front-yard fencing, and we contact New Jersey One Call at least three business days before digging. Utility lines in older neighborhoods can run in unexpected places, so we do not skip this step on any job.

- First capital of New Jersey. English settlers founded Elizabethtown in 1664, naming it for the wife of Sir George Carteret, and the town served as New Jersey's first capital. Elizabeth Questions
I rent out a house in Elizabeth. Which fence needs the least maintenance?
Vinyl and powder-coated aluminum need the least care: no staining or painting, just an occasional wash. Chain link is durable and lower in cost but offers no privacy unless slats are added.
Can you install a driveway gate in Westminster or Elmora?
Yes. We size the gate to your driveway, choose swing or slide based on the space, and make sure it opens into your property, not across the sidewalk.
My lot in the North End is narrow. Will a fence fit beside the house?
Usually. We measure the gap between the house and the line, choose a post size that fits, and add a walk gate wide enough for trash cans.
We live near the water in Elizabethport. Does that change the material?
It can. Moist, salty air is hard on bare steel and untreated wood, so we recommend vinyl or powder-coated aluminum with corrosion-resistant hardware there.
